Bill Caselton's story.
Legal Services
I am able to give a full legal service either through myself as an independent legal advisor or where necessary through solicitors with whom I am connected.
I am an Affiliate Member of the YDSA and a full Member of the IIMS also a Member of the Institut Internationale des Experts Maritimes and a Member of the International Association of Marine Investigators
I like dealing with wooden boats especially classics.
I am the Consultant Marine Surveyor for the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy
I undertake Registrations which involve Tonnage Surveys.
I am the UK representative of the Hellenic Register of Shipping . My office is in fact their UK office.
They are the Certifying Authority for my coding work.
I operate all over Europe so perhaps this can be borne in mind when deciding strategies.
I provide Expert Witness Services and in this respect I am an Associate Member of the Academy of Experts and am also on the UK Register of Expert Witnesses and a member of the Intota Expert Network.
It is not the purpose of this web site to bombard you with technical or nautical jargon.
The purpose is to establish a relationship with you to enable you to have full confidence and ease in your dealings with me.
In my view it is a responsibility of a Surveyor to save clients unnecessary expense and to be able to do this the surveyor must have experience of boats and know about them and importantly have a passion for them. This experience will best enable him to have the practical approach and achieve this aim.
Unlike some surveyors I am happy that my clients are present at the survey especially first time buyers and those with limited experience.
I am keen that I am able to give them an overview of the vessel at the time and to answer any questions that they may have. It is important that I am able to advise them at the time in respect of any matters which may manifest themselves. They are then able to picture these situations in their mind's eye rather than the relatively impersonal survey reports.
The client has to be satisfied that this is the boat for them and that they are happy with the situation in the light of my investigations
It is not all about books!
However it is crucial your Surveyor is accredited by membership of any one or more of the recognised bodies such as the YDSA or IIMS . It is a prerequisite of such membership that the Surveyor has Professional Indemnity Insurance to a minimum amount. The client must ensure that the Surveyor is adequately covered .
My background is one steeped in sailing boats from dinghies with stick masts and bits of rag to ocean racers.
I have been involved with the building of a number of boats and for myself when about 19 or 20 I built from scratch my glued clinker National 12 racing dinghy. Subsequently I completed from a bare hull a Trapper 28 and then fulfilled my dream of building my own boat from scratch which is a Bruce Farr designed 30 ft cruiser racer.
I still have her.
I do like my fishing however and have a wooden 20ft clinker built fishing boat which I am about to completely restore.
So you can talk to me about most things and somewhere in there I should be able (to solve your problems and deal with your needs.
That is me!
I am easily contactable through this site or otherwise and am always delighted to hear about your boats.
